Jars of Clay Concert
On May 20, 2004 a wonderful evening of music at the Moore Theater was opened by former UW Husky and Seattle Seahawk quarterback Warren Moon. He welcomed the crowd and explained the importance of the event — to raise funds for Operation Smile's missions in third world countries to repair facially disfigured children.

The opening act of the evening was Seattle's own Ian McFeron and the Band, followed by the headliners of the evening Jars of Clay — a contemporary Christian music band who support many worthwhile causes.

About Our Chapter

In the past five years, Washington state volunteers have been on at least 20 trips to 10 countries involving approximately 3,000 children. Through the work of multiple Operation Smile chapters, disfigurement has been replaced with a smile for more than 45,000 children at home and abroad since 1982.

Operation Smile works with overseas governments and medical staffs to develop a minimum five-year relationship to enable a sustainable and self-sufficient program. These countries include the Philippines, Vietnam, the Middle East, Russia, Colombia, Venezuela, Kenya, Romania and China.

The humanitarian goals carried out by Operation Smile members are driven by a belief that volunteers are needed locally and abroad. By playing an active role in the world community, we hope to better life for everyone by building understanding and interaction between the U.S. and other countries. Frequently, a hand of friendship extended to help a child can lead to breakthroughs in other areas of diplomacy.

Mary Uyyek R.N. mission to Nanjing, China in 2000 Volunteer Memories
Team member Mary Uyyek, R.N. (center) works with Dr. Earl Bryant (left), an Operation Smile team pediatric intensivist from South Carolina, during our mission to Nanjing, China in 2000.

Mary recalls the feelings of gratification out-weighed the exhausting long hours of work. It was expressed superbly in a letter to Mary from Dr. Bryant.

He wrote, "What a pleasure it was to have worked with you in Nanjing! I shall never forget our Nanjing experience — the incoherent old man and his foundling 'son', the weeping father whose son was not chosen, the professionalism and kindness of our Chinese counterparts, the innumerable moments of highest human experience as we gave and received three-fold."
